Shankill GAA Club First Ever Summer Camp - A Huge Success
Since
it’s revival in February of this year, Shankill GAA Club has gone from strength
to strength. Paramount to this is the hugely successful Juvenile Academy which
takes place every Saturday in Shanganagh Park from 12pm to 1pm, catering for
children from 5-12 years old; as well as the U9-10 and U11-12 Training Session
every Wednesday from 7pm to 8pm. Each week anything from 70 to 100 children
gather to participate in Gaelic Games with Shankill GAA Club, including
Football, Hurling and Camogie. Not only are skills learned but a huge sense of
fun, friendship and teamwork is achieved. These
values were further enhanced at the recent Shankill GAA Summer Camp which took
place last week. It was a hugely successful camp with over 95 children taking
part in Gaelic Games from Monday to Friday. Shanganagh Park was alive with the
blue, green and white of Shankill GAA Club on a daily basis, with screams of
delight and enjoyment coming from all corners of the field. Children from 4
years old to 12 years old took part in various skills, games and matches across
Football, Hurling and Camogie.
As Pat
Maguire (Committee Member) put it: “We are
delighted with the success of our Summer Camp last week. Being involved with
the Club in its early years and now in its revival, it was a very proud moment
for me watching all those children take to the field in Shanganagh Park to
participate in our Gaelic Games. It makes it all worthwhile.” The
Club would like to pass on a huge thank you to the wonderful Summer Camp
sponsor, Caddy Care, the coaches, train-drivers, committee members, parents and
especially the children and anyone else who helped to make it an outstanding
success. We would also like to thank Shankill FC & Cuala for the use of
their facilities, it is truly appreciated. A special thanks to David Treacy,
Dublin Hurler for coming to meet our kids at the end of camp party. Shankill GAA Club looks forward to seeing all those children who attended the Camp at their Juvenile Academy every Saturday or at the Wednesday evening training session. It will be truly special seeing the local children proudly kitted out in their Shankill GAA Club Summer Camp t-shirts in the future. History is being made in Shankill.
“It
was a truly fantastic week. Speaking as both a parent and a committee member it
was a fun and enjoyable experience for both me and my kids. Already they can’t
wait for next week’s Juvenile Academy.” John Doherty (Club Secretary)
Plans are underway for a second Summer Camp in August, details to be confirmed very soon!
